下記の英文で、概要はわかるのですが、第2段落の終わりにあるwhich is about as serious as it gets,の部分が腑におちません。whichの先行詞を前の文の内容と考えて「自分の死を考えることは自分の死（が深刻になるのと）同じぐらい深刻なものである」としてみたのですが、it getsがよくわかりません。見当違いをしているような気がしますが、お教えいただければ幸いです。 前橋生 （原文) TIME: Oct. 30, 2007 Are We Happier Facing Death? 2008-08-19 23:28最初に、その "as serious as it gets" は、"as [形容詞] as it gets" のパターンで、特に、[形容詞] が "good" の場合で用いられることが多いようで、"as good as it gets" でいくつかの英語辞典に載っているようですが、一種の慣用表現で、「それ以上にはならないほど [形容詞] である」などの意味です。すなわち、[形容詞] の最上級とほぼ同じ意味と考えてよいと思います。その "it" は状況などを指すと考えられると思います。
そのため、その話の流れと文脈から、その非制限用法の関係節 "which is about as serious as it gets" での "which" は文／節を受け、その先行詞は直前の節 "they consider their own death" で、その意味は、「それ以上深刻なことはおよそないが」などになると解釈することができると思います。そして、そこでは、"serious threats" の例として、"when they consider their own death" を挙げ、それがおよそ最も深刻なことであると、補足していると解釈するのが自然な流れと思います。

as good as it getsで慣用表現とは知りませんでした。すっきりしました。手元の辞書では見つかりませんが、As Good As It Getsという題のジャック・ニコルソンの映画もあることを知りました。勉強になりました。
