ここでお聞きするしかないと思い掲載しました。宜しくお願い致します。 英語を勉強し始めた頃、ある帰国子女と出会ったことがあり、何年何月に日本に戻ってきたかを知りたくて、 When did you come back to Japan? と尋ねると、予想に反して、 I came back when I was fifteen. という返事が返ってきました。 何年何月かを知りたい場合はなんと言えばよいのか聞くと、 What year and month did you come back to Japan? でよいのでは。と言われ、その時はそれで納得したのですが、 今になって、いろいろ疑問がわき、関連内容を調べました。 しかし、私が調べることが出来たのは以下しかありません。 [辞書および英語番組で述べられていたこと] ･日付, 年月日＝the date ･今日は何日ですか？＝What day of the month is it today？/ What's the date today？/ What date is it today？ →It’s May 1０ dateを使っても月日のみで年の返事をもらえないのか不思議です。 ･今日は何曜日ですか？ What day (of the week) is it today? ･何年＝what year [BNCでの検索結果] ･What month of the year：1件 What month of the year is third month oh no ･What day of the month :１件 Does the standing order form say what day of the month it's to be taken out on? ･What day of the year ：0件 そこで質問です。 １．（１）～（６）の英文で誤っているものがありましたら指摘していただけませんか。 （１）今日は何年何月何日何曜日ですか？ What year, month, day and day of the week is it today? （確証なし） （２）今日は何年何月何日ですか？ What year, month and day is it today? （３）今日は何年何月ですか？ ･What year and month is it today? ･What month of the year is it today? （確証なし） （４）今日は何月何日ですか？ ･What month and day is it today? ･What day of the month is it today? ･What's the date today? （５）今日は何年ですか？（普通、今年は何年ですか？ ですが、表現を合わせたものと考えてください。） What year is it today? （６）今日は何月ですか？ What month is it today? ２．今日は何日（日のみ）ですか？ の英文が全くわかりません。なんと言えばよいのでしょうか。 （What day is it today? だと曜日を聞いていることになり、正しくないと思っているのですが。） |

2008-02-02 23:57年月日の順は、日本語と異なり、英語では day/month/year の順が世界的に標準であると思います。しかし、アメリカは日常的には month/day/year の順が一般的になっています。
アメリカでも、例えば、"notary" (公証人) の前で署名する書面などでの日付は、かなり形式的で、"notarize" した日付などを、例えば今日の日付の場合で書くと：
this 2nd day of February, 2008
などと書いたと思います。
疑問文の場合でも、そのように day/month/year の順が一般的と思います。
また、"date" は、本来は月の中の日と言う意味ですが、書面など (特に署名の日付など) では、"date" と指定されていれば、年月日を書くことが一般的です。
何れにしても、"date" と指定されたり、聞かれた場合に、何を答えるかは、状況や文脈などによると思いますし、少しでも常識がある人なら、何を答えるのが適切であるかわかると思います。会話などのシチュエーションで、今年であることが明らかであれば、月日だけになることが一般的と思いますし、今月であることが明らかであれば、日だけになることも多いと思います。書面など記録がいつまでも残るものについては、年月日を書くことになると思います。
そして、ほとんどのシチュエーションでは、年月日を聞く場合は "what date" だけで十分であると思います。"what date, month and year" などと聞くことは、かなり特殊な場合だけと思います。英語圏の著者による英語圏で出版された本の中から "Google" の "Book Search" で例文を捜しても、"what date, month and year" は、精神鑑定関係などの本で患者への質問などの例がある程度でした。

上述しました通り、通常は、何年何月何日何曜日をすべて明示的に聞くような疑問文は、ありえないと思いますが、もし、かなり特殊な場合であるとすると、語順は、day (of the week)/date/month/year となります。
"Google" の "Book Search" では、間接疑問文の例ですが、以下がありました：

アメリカでも、疑問文の場合は、"what day, date, month and year" の順が一般的と思います。

"Google" の "Book Search" で、出版された本から捜したところ、"what day, month and year" のほうが "what date, month and year" よりも圧倒的に多くあるようでした (正確な数はわかりませんが)。何れにしても、"what date, month and year" というパターンは、少ないようですが、あることはあります。

それについては、レス [4880] で述べた通り、"what date ..." では、聞かれた側としては、シチュエーションによって、月日を答えること、あるいは年月日を答えることが適切となる場合もありえると思います。一方、"what day of the month ..." では、特に日だけを聞いていることが明確になると思います。
